How to introduce yourself during a fashion interview

Preparing a compelling elevator pitch is crucial for making a strong impression during a fashion interview. I wished I had known this when I was looking for a job 10 years ago.

Many of my amazing clients express discomfort when it comes to 'selling' themselves, as they consider themselves humble. I still share the same feeling to this day, so I completely understand them.

A professor I had during my MA at IED advised us to 'Fake it until you make it,' which turned out to be excellent guidance. If you don't feel confident giving a speech, pretend to be the most confident speaker at home while practicing it until you've done it so many times that you become genuinely confident.

Returning to our topic, an elevator pitch during an interview is a brief and persuasive speech that summarizes who you are, what you do, and why you are the right fit for the position.

Moreover, it's crucial because it is, 99.9% of the time, the first thing you will say during an interview - and we all know how important first impressions are.

When the interviewer asks you to introduce yourself, there you go!

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you prepare an effective elevator pitch for your fashion interview:

  1. Start with a Strong Opening: Begin your elevator pitch with a captivating and concise introduction. Mention your name, current role (if applicable), and express your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

  2. Highlight Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Identify your key strengths, skills, and unique qualities that set you apart from other candidates. Focus on what makes you valuable to the fashion industry and the specific position you're interviewing for. Reviewing the requirements of job description will help you decide what to highlight, what’s important for that role in particular.

  3. Showcase Relevant Experience: Briefly discuss your relevant work experience and achievements. Highlight key projects, roles, or responsibilities that demonstrate your expertise in the fashion industry. Use quantifiable metrics or specific examples to emphasize your impact.

  4. Express Passion and Motivation: Convey your passion for fashion and your genuine interest in the company. Share why you are motivated to work for this particular organization and how your skills align with their values and goals. This can help the interviewer see your commitment and cultural fit.

  5. Keep It Concise: Remember that an elevator pitch is meant to be short and impactful. Aim for a pitch that takes around 1 minute to deliver. Avoid unnecessary details and focus on the most compelling aspects of your background and qualifications.

  6. Practice, Practice, Practice: Practice your elevator pitch until you feel confident delivering it naturally. Rehearse in front of a mirror, with a friend, or record yourself to identify areas for improvement. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you'll become.

  7. Be Open to Adaptation: Tailor your elevator pitch to the specific fashion role and company you're interviewing with. Highlight aspects of your background and skills that align with their needs and values.

Remember, the key is to be authentic and enthusiastic while showcasing your value in a concise manner.

Hopefully this will help!
